The Kingdom of Mustang
Mustang is a geographic extension of the Tibetan Plateau, and the bleak beauty of its wild, bare terrain evokes the Tibetan highlands. It was founded in the 15th century by a Tibetan monarch who consolidated various small local chiefdoms into the Kingdom of Lo. Eventually Mustang was incorporated into Nepal but it has remained isolated, opened recently to trekkers since 1992. Full of myth and legend, crumbling ruins and the practical King are aspects of your Himalayan adventure, not to be missed. Mustang is the old Kingdom of Lo. Actually the capital of the Mustang district is Jomsom, but the real Tibetan style district lies north of Kagbeni and is usually referred to as Upper Mustang. It gives you an opportunity to visit the main town, Lo Manthang, and one or two of the villages beyond.
