WHITE WATER RIVER RAFTING IN INDIA

Pictures courtesy Aquaterra AdventuresThe Himalayas give rise to numerous rivers which make India a world class white water destination with plenty of first descent and exploratory possibilities. We offer rafting and kayaking trips ranging from a few hours to a few days. Trips can be customised to suit special interests and tailor made for groups of 4 or more.

We offer the following Rafting expeditions :

The Great Bramhaputra Descent - Nov 22 - Dec 06, 2002

In the spirit of adventure and the love of outdoors, a plucky group of 22 will defy danger. The mighty upper Bramhaputra, where the terrain is inhospitable, the river, tricky and its gorges, menacing, they journey into the great, wild far east of Arunachal Pradesh for 3 arduous days. And then, the 8-day expedition begins. 3 rafts and 3 kayaks will tackle roaring white-water and challenging grade 4 and 5 rapids in pulling out 180 Kms at Pasighat. This is The Great Descent. A complete celebration of the International Year of Eco-Tourism, 2002.

The Alaknanda River Expedition - Oct 6-12, Nov 10-16 and Dec 15-21, 2002; Feb 16-22 & Mar 16-22, 2003

Pictures courtesy Aquaterra AdventuresA self contained multi-day river adventure down the Alaknanda & Ganga rivers. The trip starts from Rudraprayag, a small town on the Badrinath road, famous for the man-eating leopard shot down by Jim Corbett in 1932 in its forests. Journeying 128kms to Rishikesh, the run takes you through thick forests and deep gorges, ending each day at a different river beach to make camp for the night, enhancing the adventure of being on the river. Foaming rapids, sandy beaches and starry nights make this a truly outdoor trip, even for the first time rafter.

Bhagirathi River Expedition - Oct 6-11, Nov 17-22, and Dec 8-13, 2002 ; Feb 23-28, Mar 23-28 & Apr 20-25, 2003

An expedition for the adventure seeker. The self-contained multi-day trip begins at Tehri, below the controversial Tehri dam, to cover 138 kms till Rishikesh, through over a hundred rapids (mostly Grades 3 and 4) on the Bhagirathi till its confluence with the Alaknanda at Devprayag to form the Ganga. Camping at night on different beaches as the run takes you down river coupled with days which send the adrenaline sky high, makes this trip a complete outdoor adventure.

The Kali/Sarda River Expedition - Nov 2-7 and Dec 7-13, 2002 ; Feb 8-14 & Mar 8-14, 2003

Pictures courtesy Aquaterra AdventuresThe Kali river forms the international border between India and Nepal in its upper reaches. A self-contained river journey down this river is one of the prime options in this part of the Himalaya. The river flows past terraced farms of Kumaoni and Nepali villages, fresh water streams, sandy beaches, thick tropical jungles, plantations as we travel downstream through the terai belt negotiating exciting white water. With the Mahseer making it an angler's delight, the lack of road access makes it a complete wilderness journey. After the first few days of serene float past its confluence with the Saryu at Pancheshwar (also a famous fishing spot) with the occasional big rapid, the Kali makes its final descent to the plains in the last day on river, beginning with the mighty Chooka rapid. Flowing past the terai hills after densely forested hillsides, this trip is an outdoor wilderness experience in a league of its own.

The Zanskar River Expedition - 12 - 25 August 2002, 24 August - 06 September 2002; August 10-23 and August 24 - September 6, 2003

A self contained multi-day river adventure down the spectacular and scenic Zanskar river gorge. The trip takes you down the extremely desolate, remote and sheer Zanskar gorge with walls rising a few thousand feet out of the river bed, culminating on the mighty Indus river. This, combined with hikes and visits to various gompas in the Ladakh and Zanskar region makes this a fascinating trip to the last truly lost horizon of our shrinking planet - Zanskar, the land of white copper. This run through Grade III/IV rapids enhances the experience of journeying down this otherwise un-trekkable gorge.
