GOLDEN JUBILEE EVEREST BASE CAMP MOTORCYCLE RIDE
....A Tribute to the Legends
Dates: 08 - 20 September 2003
How high is high?
The route over the Higher Himalayas tops out at Khardung La -5602 M, enroute the Ancient Silk route. New Englanders can think about stacking three
Mt. Washington's on the top of one another. That is the approximate elevation of the World's highest crossable pass by Motorbike, At 18,380 feet, this pass also dwarfs Pikes Peak (14,110 feet) and the highest peak in the Alps, Mont Blanc (15,771). It is almost like riding a motorcycle over Kilimanjaro (19,341) or Mt. McKinley (20,320). The granddaddy, Everest, towers at 28,028 feet but, alas, is not ride able!
1953 - Sir Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay Sherpa were the First to be on Top Of the World
2003 – Inspired by the same spirit - Indian Shepherds…Camps & Adventures…(P) Ltd. pay Tributes to the Legends' high endurance - joined by the Bikers from across the World to endeavour to ride their Motorcycles to the highest point reachable on Wheels – The Everest base camp. Even though rider cannot experience Mt. Everest to summit, one can still get quite close to see its beauty!
The ride is a Barometer understanding challenge of high altitudes. Here oxygen is as sparse as population due to lack of tree line. It is an out of the World experience of riding classic technology Royal Enfield – 500 CC, surely an acid test of the technology & respect for Human endurance. This motorcycle safari shall surely leave us a changed biker - to have more confidence, compassion, love & respect for each other and mankind.
Tibet, "the roof of the world" until the 1980's, was restricted for outside visitors. The mystery of Tibet still prevails - relative isolation serves to preserve its spectacular scenery and rich cultural heritage. Lhasa, the capital of Tibet is a truly fascinating city, its streets, temples, monasteries and palaces living repositories of traditional artistic, cultural and religious richness. Tibet's high plateau, snow-covered in winter but supporting vegetation in summer, are overlooked by the highest peaks of the Himalayas and there are fantastic views of mountains and glaciers, including the magnificet Mount Everest from the base camp.
